Welcome to Abundant Love, an eight day email series exploring God’s rich love for us through Scripture and story. Today’s devotional was written by Kimberly Knowle-Zeller.
“Love hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:7).
Reflection
I stand outside the school doors in the parking lot under the cover of shade from the 3:00 p.m. sun. Next to me there’s a growing line of cars. With the release of the door handle, a staff member walks outside, walkie talkie in hand, and says, “Charlotte Zeller. Kindergarten, Charlotte Zeller.”
A few other kids walk out and pile in cars. The staff member who called Charlotte’s name points to me when Charlotte reaches the door. I see Charlotte turn towards me, smile and run. She’s pumping her hands to the wind with arms wide open. When she crashes into me I take a step back off balance and spin her around offering a kiss on her hair. I say, “I’m so glad to see you, Charlotte!”
Each time she barrels into my arms and holds on tight.
Another day, as I’m anticipating Charlotte’s hug, I wonder about God.
Is this how God welcomes us? With open arms, a smile and the reassurance of presence and love even in our absence?
I think so. At least it’s a belief that sustains me. I hope it does for you, too.
When you’re feeling unable to get out of bed,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you’re missing the ease of pre-pandemic life,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you’re sick and weary,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you’re unable to forgive,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you can’t let go of the anger,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you wonder if you’ll ever get that break,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you question your worth,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
When you’ve lost your patience and temper too many times to count,
God’s arms are open to welcome you.
God’s enduring love has no end.
Questions for pondering
Who in your life offers you unconditional love? Say a prayer of thanks for them and reflect on how you can share that same love with others.
Is there someone in your life who could use your words of welcome? Make a list of people who you interact with throughout the day and possible ways you could welcome them with your words or actions.
Practice for the day
Take a prayerful walk around your neighborhood or city. As you walk, think about the people who you pass, the people who live near you, and the needs of your community. Pray to God to help you show up for the people you encounter.
Prayer
Embracing God,
thank you for opening your arms to me;
whether I feel your presence or not,
you are with me.
Teach me to open my heart
and hands
to welcome others
with love
grace
forgiveness.
Amen.
